Navigating Parenting with Nervous System Regulation: Insights from Fiona Ng
Hello, everyone! I’m Fiona Ng, a Parenting Coach with a passion for supporting families on their unique parenting journeys. In this guest episode, I’m excited to share my experiences and insights on nervous system regulation in parenting, discussing various aspects that are close to my heart.
My Journey into Parent Coaching
My path into parent coaching has been shaped by my own experiences as well as my training through the Jai Institute of Parenting. I’ve had the privilege of working with parents and families in diverse contexts, which has deepened my understanding of the challenges many face. Each family has its unique story, and I strive to help parents navigate those narratives with compassion and clarity.
What Does Conscious Parenting Mean to Me?
In our conversation, I reflect on the term “Conscious Parenting.” It’s more than just a buzzword; it’s about being present and aware of our reactions and choices. Conscious parenting encourages us to engage with our children thoughtfully, fostering an environment of understanding and support.
Understanding Nervous System Regulation
One of the key topics we explore is nervous system regulation and dysregulation. Understanding how our nervous systems function—and how they impact our children’s responses—is crucial. When we can identify when we are dysregulated, we can better support our children in navigating their emotions.
The Importance of Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the first step in nervous system regulation. As parents, we need to recognize our emotional states and how they affect our interactions with our children. By doing so, we can model healthy emotional responses and create a more harmonious family dynamic.
My Own Experiences with Childhood Trauma
I share my own experiences with childhood trauma and how they shaped my parenting journey. Recognizing the patterns I inherited was a vital step in my growth. I began to consciously create new, positive patterns for my children, allowing us all to thrive.
Advice for Parents
For any parent seeking to start this journey, my advice is simple: begin with self-reflection. Acknowledge your feelings and explore where they come from. The journey may not always be easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

“This process is worth it. I thought of it as an investment in myself and my family’s future, and my goal was simply to be a better parent, and I just didn’t have the skills, and this process provides that. The time investment is worth it, because you really get to work on the process, you get to explore your inner workings, you learn new skills. I would say if you feel called to do this process, there is a reason for that and I do not think you will regret it.” – Izzy. Washington.
